Choose Disinfectants by Product Format

Disinfectant wipes

Pre-saturated wipes offer a convenient format for compatible treatment tables, counters and high-touch surfaces. Compare wipe size, canister quantity, pathogen claims and the label’s required wet contact time.

Ready-to-use liquids and sprays

Ready-to-use products require no dilution when applied as directed. Check whether the liquid should be sprayed directly, applied to a cloth or dispensed using another method specified by the manufacturer.

Concentrates and bulk refills

Concentrated disinfectants and larger refill containers can support high-volume facilities. Measure the dilution exactly, use appropriate dispensing equipment and label workplace containers as required.

Hand sanitizers and dispensers

Hand antiseptics are formulated for use on skin and may be available in personal bottles, bulk packs or dispenser refills. Confirm that the selected refill is compatible with the dispenser model.

Selecting a Disinfectant for a Canadian Clinic

An authorized hard-surface disinfectant sold in Canada carries an eight-digit Drug Identification Number (DIN). Many authorized hand sanitizers carry a Natural Product Number (NPN), although authorization type can depend on the formulation. Confirm the number on the Canadian label and use the product only for its stated purpose.

Review the microorganisms and use areas listed on the label rather than assuming every disinfectant provides the same coverage. Contact time is the period during which the surface must remain wet to achieve a stated claim. A fast application does not shorten the labelled contact time.

Material compatibility is also important. Treatment-table upholstery, plastics, painted surfaces, metals and electronic controls may react differently to alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, chlorine or other active ingredients. Follow both the disinfectant label and the equipment manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.

What products are included in this disinfectant collection?

How can I identify a disinfectant authorized in Canada?

Look for the eight-digit DIN on an authorized hard-surface disinfectant. Authorized hand sanitizers may carry an NPN or DIN depending on the product. Confirm the number and directions on the Canadian label.

What is disinfectant contact time?

Contact time is the length of time a treated surface must remain wet to achieve a claim shown on the product label. The required time can differ between products and between specific microorganism claims.

Must a surface be cleaned before it is disinfected?

Visible soil and residue should be removed before disinfection. Some products are labelled as one-step cleaner-disinfectants for specified conditions, but the exact procedure on the selected product’s label always takes priority.

Can the same disinfectant be used on hands and surfaces?

Not unless the label expressly authorizes both uses. Hand antiseptics are formulated and licensed for skin, while hard-surface disinfectants are intended for approved inanimate surfaces.

Can disinfectant wipes be used on massage tables?

Only if the disinfectant label and table manufacturer permit use on the upholstery material. Some ingredients can dry, discolour or damage vinyl, polyurethane, leather and other coated surfaces.

Can different disinfectants or cleaners be mixed?

No. Mixing products can release hazardous gases, create dangerous reactions or make the products ineffective. Use each product independently and only according to its label and workplace safety procedures.
